Grade 7, Deering Middle School

Observation:

From what I've seen over the weeks this cooperating teacher has a pretty set in stone way of teaching. It is basically the same from day to day. He always starts off with getting the clas settled and taking attendance. Next he explains what will be going on for the day, hands out materials and begins the lesson. If there are questions he will address the entire class to make sure that everybody understands his directions. Overall, his attitude toward the kids are alright. He sometimes uses sarcasm a little too frequently and some seem to take it the wrong way. (by the look on their faces) But he doesn't seem to catch that feeling from them and usually continues. For example, one day during state testing a couple of the kids needed tissues because they had runny noses. They saw that I had brought some for myself and asked me for a couple and I gladly helped them out. When the eacher saw this he said "well if you're sick you bring tissues in..." He generally acts a little nicer to the students that are into doing their work and are trying. have noticed that if a student refuses to work or just sits there he actually doesn't acknowledge them or try to fix the situation. However, sometimes he will have one of the hard working students sit with them and try to help them with the current topic.

Grades 9 & 12 North Kingstown High School

Observation:

This teacher's way of teaching is also pretty constant. She always starts the class by asking them to take out their homework, and while they are doing this she takes attendance quietly. She seems a little more sensitive to student needs and always addresses them with a "chipper" tone and like she cares what they are saying or what they are concerned over. She actively tries to be the "cool" teacher and covers subjects that hit "close-to-home" for the students so they can relate to their own lives. For example, as stated before she makes coffee for the seniors in the AP classes and covers subjects where the students can watch a modern movie about it. (ie: The Perfect Storm) Overall I think she tries and succeeds in creating a great relationship with her students.

Reflection:

I moreso would like to mirror the teaching style of my high school cooperating teacher. I think sarcasm can be translated differently depending on different personalities, and in a middle school I would think that it could easily be misinterpreted. The way you perceive a classroom and the students in it, I feel, is one of the main factors in how you teach. If you have no patience with your students or shown the slightest sign of not wanting to be there, the students will feel the same way. I fully believe that a teacher's way of being and "chipperness vs. dronelike sense" sets the tone of the classroom. These are some things I fully intend to keep in mind when I'm in the front of the classroom.
